3 Ways To Help You And Your Your Child Get Through Their First Day At Preschool

Posted on

Is the first day of preschool for your child approaching?  If so, it will be a big adjustment from their normal routine of staying home with you.  Since preschool will be a new experience, it will help to know how you can ease them into their first day so it goes much smoother for them.

Do A Practice Run

A speedy morning routine is something that your child may not be used to, especially when you are rushing to get out the door in the morning on your way to work.  It will help to give the morning routine a practice run the day before, so that your child can adjust to their new morning schedule.

This means waking up at the proper time, having breakfast, and taking the time to get their shoes and coat on so they can get out the door.  The first day may be a little rough, but it will get them into the routine so they know what to expect on the actual first day. As a parent, you'll be less stressed since it will help you judge how long getting ready will really take.

Schedule A Drop-In Visit

Find out if your preschool will allow you to schedule a drop-in visit prior to their first day. This will give your child a small taste of what daycare is like, but without having to leave him alone in the setting all day.

This will give your kid the opportunity to see what the preschool is like, make some friends, and have fun. As a parent, it will give you some time to observe them in the space, which is something you'll rarely get to do once they start going on a regular basis.

The drop-in visit may actually have your child look forward to going back for the full day.

Role Play

It will also help to role play at home some of the routines that your child can be expected to do once they start going to preschool.  This could include following directions like sitting on the rug for circle time. If your child is not following directions at home, now is the time to let them know what will be expected of them one they start preschool.
